"The act of paying is perhaps the most uncomfortable infliction that the two orchard thieves entailed upon us. But being paid, - what will compare with it?" -Herman Melville, Moby DickThis classic commentary on the nature of commerce clearly illustrates the crux of the paid content dilemma. No one enjoys paying for things, but everyone in the world obviously loves to get paid. The solution to this paradox in the world of online media has for years been the ubiquitous presence of advertising. Since Proctor and Gamble sponsored the first radio soap operas back in the 20s, advertising has been a constant presence in the media world, and in online video is usually found as prerolls, ad overlays, or pop-up ads. But recently, there seems to be a growing movement away from this revenue generating staple, a movement towards a model that separates participating media from the arena of free content entirely.

In February of this year the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will gather in Hollywood, California for yet another Academy Awards celebration. The Oscars will be handed out to writers, directors, producers, and actors who have delighted us over the past year with their amazing creative work. But for every person in the entertainment industry who receives an award, there are myriad artists and performers around the world who will never get the chance to work and study in the movie capital of the world simply because of their geographic location. Hollywood icon and master acting instructor, Gloria Gifford hopes to change all of that with the help of Pivotshare online video platform

Technology investment in Orange County, California is growing at a tremendous rate, so much so that the area is threatening to pull the tech spotlight south from Silicon Valley. Part of this exciting development in innovation is due to the efforts of an OC organization called OCTANe. The mission of OCTANe is to connect innovators and entrepreneurs with the crucial relationships and resources they need in order to develop their business. Created in September of 2002 by co-founders Tom Moebus, former vice-chancellor of University of California, Irvine and Dwight Decker, former CEO and chairman of Conexant Systems, the organization has made a lasting impact on the economic development of the entire Orange County area. Over the course of their history, OCTANe has helped companies raise over $217 million in funding and equity exits. In 2012 alone, $77 million dollars was raised for a variety of new businesses through their LaunchPad program, the group’s platform for assisting startups in the technology, biomedical and cleantech industries. Our company, Pivotshare, was among them.
